Money News: DOW Suffers Major Loss; London, Canada Down; Germany, France, Asian Markets Up

The DOW Jones Industrial Average, unable to shake the Bear chase, suffered massive triple digit losses, losing in one week an entire years gain, closed down as the top three world market indicators took a hit signaling a down turn.

The DOW performed steadily throughout the week but was unable to rally and posted high triple digit losses to close down at 17,748.31 (-145.91/-0.82%). Opening at 17,889.05, the DOW held a daily range of 17,629.89-to-17,889.05.

Gainers include Repligen Corp (+4.449/+16.74%) with a closing price of $31.31 per share, Ebix Inc (+3.94/+15.38%) with a closing price of $29.55 per share, Anacor Pharmaceuticals Inc (+7.14/+14.72%) with a closing price of $55.66, and GW Pharmaceuticals Inc (+11.08/+13.10%) with a closing price of $95.66.

Losers for the week include Theravance Inc closing down at $17.57 per share down (-1.62/-8.44%), Zumiez Inc closing down at $37.24 with a loss of (-2.72/-6.81%), Zulily Inc also closed down at $13.07 for a loss of (-0.84/-6.04%) and QIWI PLC closing down at $20.98 per share for a loss of (-1.23/-5.54%)

Active for the week included MicroSoft Corp moved 58.01M shares in solid trading to close up at $41.38 per share for a gain of (+0.88%), Apple Inc in medium trading moved 51.83M shares, closing down at $123.59 per share for a loss of (+0.69%), Intel Corp in light trading moved 47.95M shares closing up at $30.93 per share with a gain of (+0.42%) and Sirius XM Holdings Inc in light trading moved 37.81M shares closing down at $3.91 per share with a loss of (-0.38%).

The NASDAQ closed down at 4,871.76 with a loss of (-21.53/-0.44%).

The S&P 500 also closed down at 2,053.40 for a loss of (-12.55/-0.61%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets experienced a 50/40 split as the North American Markets, including the DOW Jones Industrial, S&P500, NASDAQ, Canada's S&P TSX Composite, Mexico's IPC, London's FTSE 100, all closed down with Germany's DAX, the Asian Markets including the Shanghai Composite, Hong Kong Hang Seng Japan's Nikkei 225, the CAC 40 of France, and SENEX of India closing up.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, boosting solid gains and a strong Yen, rallied steadily throughout the week to close trading up, with strong triple double digit gains, at 19,254.25 for a increase of (+263.14/+1.39%). 

Gainers for the week include Fanuc Corp (+3,400.00/+14.32%), Sumitomo Realty & Development Co Ltd (+255.00/+6.21%), Tokyu Fudosan Holdings Corp (+45.50/+5.73%), Dentsu Inc (+250.00/+4.77%).

Losers include Eisai Co Ltd (-372.00/-4.93%), Marui Group Co Ltd (-34.00/-2.38%), Chiyoda Corp (-17.00/-1.61%) and Chugai Pharmaceutical Co Ltd (-60.00/-1.54%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in thirteenth straight weeks of strong trading, moved 235.69M shares, enough for a rally, and closed up at ¥223.20 for a gain of (+1.09%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc in medium trading moved 121.59M shares to close up at ¥794.20 for a gain of (+2.69%). Also active on the Nikkei 225 were Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp also in light trading moved 56.90M shares to close up at ¥327.20 for a gain of (+1.12%) and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings Inc, in light trading moved 47.39M shares to close up at ¥519.10 for a gain of (+3.41%).

FTSE 100

London Markets, in track with North American Markets was unable to rally and finished the trading week down with small double digit losses to end the week 6740.58 with a loss of (-20.49/-0.30%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Meggitt PLC (+16.00/+2.86%), British Land Co PLC (+17.50/+2.17%), Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC (+105.00/+1.84%), Land Securities Group PLC (+22.00/+1.84%).

Losers include Glencore PLC (-11.20/-3.92%), BHP Billiton PLC (-49.00/-3.41%), BG Group PLC (-27.30/-3.26%) and Tullow Oil PLC (-9.77/-3.17%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 106.53M shares in strong trading, although not enough to rally, closed down at €78.78 for a loss of (-0.53%), Vodafone Group PLC, in light trading moved 39.59M shares to close up at €218.70 per share for a gain of (+0.83%), HSBC, in light trading moved 35.60M shares to close down at €559.80 per share for loss of (-0.09%)and Glencore PLC also in light trading moved 25.78M shares to close down at €274.55 for a loss of (-3.92).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index, as with the Shanghai Composite and Japan's Nikkei, rallied and in strong trading closed up with mid double digit gains.

The Hang Seng closed up at 23,823.21 with double digit gains of (+25.25/+0.11%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include China Shenhua Energy Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.58/+3.08%), Bank of China Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.10/+2.35%), China Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.80/+2.28%), bank of Communications Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.11/+1.72%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China Ltd , in intense trading, 364.51M shares to close up HK$4.36 (+2.35%), China Construction Bank Corp also in intense trading moved 206.19M shares closing up at HDK$6.34 (+0.96%), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in strong trading moved 195.75M shares to close up at HK$5.55.

Losers for the week include Lenovo Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.60/-5.25), Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd (-0.90/-2.57%), Li & Fung Ltd (-0.20/-2.45%), China Resources Power Holdings Co Ltd (-0.38/-2.04%).
