Money News: Top Eight World Markets Fall; Nikkei, Canadian Close Up

The DOW Jones Industrial Average sustained heavy losses this week unable to rally as investor confidence continued to fall and failed to jump start a rally globally as eight of the ten most watched markets in the world closed down.

The DOW fell sharply suffering triple digits losses and was unable to rally closed down at 17,164.95 (-251.90/-1.45%). Opening at 17,416.85, the DOW held a daily range of 17,156.82-to-17,419.590.

 Gainers for the week include Intercept Pharmaceuticals Inc (+30.34/+17.77%) with a closing price of $201.03 per share, Coherent Inc (+7.58/+13.96%) with a closing price of $61.88 per share, Amazon.com Inc (+42.75/+13.71%) with a closing price of $354.53, Synaptics Inc (+8.50/+12.44%) with a closing price of $76.81.

Losers for the week include Hawaiian Holdings Inc closing down at $19.44 per share down (-7.18/-26.97%), Cnova NV closing down at $5.50 with a loss of (-0.78/-12.42%), Align Technology Inc also closed down at $53.05 for a loss of (-5.62/-9.58%) and Discovery Communications Inc closing down at $28.08 per share for a loss of (-2.82/-9.13%)

Active for the week included Apple Inc moved 83.75M shares in heavy trading to close down at $117.16 per share with a loss (-1.46%), Microsoft in heavy trading moved 78.00M shares closing down at $40.40 per share with a loss of (-3.83%) and Facebook in medium trading moved 42.65M shares, closing down at $75.91 per share with a loss of (-2.68%).

The NASDAQ closed down at 4,635.24 with a gain of (-48.17/-1.03%).

The S&P 500 also closed down at 1,994.99 for a loss of (-26.26/-1.30%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets including the S&P500, NASDAQ the most watched European Markets, CAC 40 of France, London’s FTSE 100, Germany’s DAX, and the SENEX of India, Asian’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong Hang Seng all closed down. Canada’s S&P TSX Composite and Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed up

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225 closed the trading week up with strong double digit gains, at 17,674.39 for a gain of (+68.17/+0.39%). 

Gainers for the week include Tokyo Dome  (+46.00/+9.20%), Advantest Corp (+123.00/+8.89%), Sumco Corp  (+149.00/+8.02%), Tokuyama Corporation (+18.00/+7.41%).

Losers include Keisei Electric Railway Co Ltd (-142.00/-8.51%), NEC Corp (-26.00/-7.20%), Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp (-11.10/-3.84%) and SOFTBANK Corp (-243.00/-3.37%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in a seventh straight week of strong trading, moved 113.85M shares and closed down at ¥194.70 for a loss of (-0.56%), Nippon steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp in medium trading moved 60.83M shares to close down at ¥278.00 (-3.84%) and NEC Corp in medium trading moved 58.00M shares to close down at ¥335.00 for a loss of (-7.20%).

FTSE 100

London Markets also tumbled slightly with double digit losses to close down at 6749.40 with a gain of (-61.20/-0.90%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Randgold Resources Ltd (+290.00/+5.35%), Fresnillo PLC (+39.00/+4.52%), Tullow Oil PLC (+14.30/+4.08%), Dixons Carphone PLC (+10.80/+2.55%).

Losers include International Consolidated Airlines Group (-20.54/-3.64%), Sainsbury (J) PLC (-8.80/-3.34%), Barratt Development PLC (-14.40/-3.06%) and Morrison (Wm) Supermarkets PLC (-5.10/-2.76%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 58.33M shares in medium trading recovered to close down at €73.95 for a loss of (-1.22%), Vodafone Group PLC, in medium trading moved 42.92M shares to close down at €234.93 per share for a loss of (-1.15%), BP PLC, in light trading moved 32.16M shares to close down at €424.27 per share for loss of (-0.14%).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index also took a hit this week sustaining double digits losses as investor confidence waned, and the Asian Markets split losses with only the Nikkei closing up.  

The Hang Seng closed down at 24,507.05 with double digit losses of (-88.80/-0.36%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include Hengan International Group Co Ltd (Hong Kong) (+3.10/+3.49%), Tingyi (Cayman Islands) Holding Corp (Hong Kong) (+0.52/+2.80%), BOC Hong Kong Holdings Ltd  (Hong Kong) (+0.65/+2.43%), Cheung Kong Holdings Ltd (+2.80/+1.93%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China Ltd moving, in intense trading for the seventh consecutive week, 215.76M shares regained its footing and closed up HK$4.36 (+0.23%), China Construction Bank Corp in strong trading moved 165.29M shares to close even at HDK$6.25 (0.00%),  and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Corp also in strong trading moved 160.29M shares closing down at HDK$5.56 down (-0.71%), and PetroChina Co Ltd in moderate trading moved 57.16M shares to close down at HK$8.39 for a loss of (-0.36%).

Losers for the week include Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (-1.45/-3.44) China Resources Enterprises Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.50/-2.87%), Sands China Ltd (-1.10/-2.81%), Tencent Holdings Ltd (-3.10/-2.30%).
