The remains of 170 individuals who did not receive proper burial or cremation were discovered in the basement of a Montrose, Colorado funeral home after the property was purchased and the new funeral director began renovations.

The new owner, Matt Boyle, moved his business, Rose Memorial Parlour, to a space formally used as a funeral home and after knocking down walls made the disturbing discovery.

According to officials, Boyle has no obligations to contact the relatives an undertaking he has decided is the right thing to do.

Many of the remains have no identification and date back as far as 1947, including a Baby Boy whose casket was damaged due to flood.

The small suburban Colorado valley town, 60 miles from Grand Junction, is surrounded by mountain ranges and is most famous for Black Canyon.
