HITS the Directorial Debut from David Cross Arrives in Theaters February

Honora announced today that it will release HITS in February 2015 as a pay-what-you-want film, in partnership with BitTorrent, Inc.  HITS, written and directed by David Cross, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014.

 

On February 13, it will be the first feature film to be distributed as a BitTorrent Bundle, directly to fans as a pay-what-you-want release.  Fans will also be able set their own pricing in theaters at pay-what-you-want screenings in theatrical markets throughout the US and Canada and on VHX.  This will coincide with a traditional theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles and on iTunes, Google Play, Vimeo and other platforms.

“With the release of HITS, we’re giving audiences what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in and at a price that they choose,” said Honora Founder Giles Andrew.  “As far as we know, this experiment is the first of its kind and was borne out of an unwavering belief in the film and our hopes for it to reach the widest possible audience.”

HITS marks the first feature film and pay-what-you-want project to be released as a BitTorrent Bundle,” said Straith Schreder, Director of Content Strategy, BitTorrent, Inc.  “And it marks a way forward for distribution: a sustainable model for directly reaching and engaging 170 million fans around the world online, and in theaters, on your own terms.”

David Cross will also launch a Kickstarter campaign today to raise supplemental funds in an effort to get HITS into as many cities as possible, allowing fans the opportunity to take an active part in the film’s distribution.  “For me this is all about offering as many fans as possible the opportunity to see this film,” said Cross.  "What we would do with the money we raise here is go out to a number of different cities, rent and pay for a theater, the staffing, marketing, and then fans can pay what they want to see the film.  The more money we raise, the more cities we can go to.” 

HITS is a dark comedy exploring the nature of fame in 21st Century YouTube America. The film takes place in a small town in upstate New York populated by people who trade in unrealistic expectations. It’s a story in which fame, delusion, earnestness, and recklessness meet, shake hands, and disrupt the lives around them.

Written and Directed by David Cross, HITS is produced by Giles Andrew, Ryan Brooks, David Cross, Charles Denton, and Jessica Latham. The film stars Meredith Hagner, Matt Walsh, James Adomian, Jake Cherry, Derek Waters and Wyatt Cenac along with Julia Stiles, David Koechner, Jessie Ennis, Amy Sedaris, Erinn Hayes, Michael Cera, Amy Carlson, Jason Ritter, and Kurt Braunohler.
