CVNE Winery, of Rioja, Spain, Presents The Works of Sir Anthony Caro

CVNE (pronounced Coo-nay), a leading producer of Spanish wines from Rioja, will host 'Caro at CVNE' an exhibition of installation pieces, of renowned British artist Sir Anthony Caro,  throughout the historic winery grounds.

'Caro at CVNE' is the third annual sculpture installation exhibition to be presented at CVNE, following the very successful exhibitions of world-renowned sculptors Eduardo Chillida in 2014 and Cristina Iglesias in 2015.

Comprised of 23 installations, the work will be displayed throughout the cellars, gardens and outdoor courtyard areas.

Lauded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation, Anthony Caro, (1924-2013), is one of the most important British sculptors of the 20th Century.   His work, characterised by assemblages of metal using 'found' industrial objects has been presented and collected at major museums worldwide, including:  the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Bilbao, Spain: the Institute of Modern Art, Valencia, Spain;the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; the Tate Gallery Museum, London, the National Portrait Gallery, London;three museums in Pas-de-Calais; France to accompany the 2008 inauguration of Caro's 'Chapel of Light' situated in the Church of St Jean Baptiste in Bourbourg, Northern France; and the Museo Correr, Venice, Italy.

Caro also collaborated with celebrated architects, notably Frank Gehryon the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, and with Norman Foster and the engineer Chris Wiseto design the London Millennium Footbridge spanning the Thames River between St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Modern.

It is perhaps no small coincidence that Caro was born the same year as the Basque sculptor, Eduardo Chillida, in 1924. During his life, Caro was in frequent contact with the Basque Country and with Spain, and became a great admirer of Chillida's work.  A mutual sentiment that was beautifully distilled by the critic and historian Andrew Dempsey in his book about these two contemporaries, titled 'Sculptors Talking: Anthony Caro, Eduardo Chillida.'

"Caro was always very articulate about his artistic thought and about sculpture in general: he was not only a creator, he was a person who reflected on his trade and the sense of sculpture within the artistic human tradition" remarked Maria Urrutia, fifth generation founding family member and Director of Marketing at CVNE winery.  "That is why this exhibition in this particular winery, where tradition and innovation, harmony and quality come together, not only in its wines but also in its buildings, is particularly meaningful."

Guests are invited to roam the historic cellars and beautiful gardens at the CVNE Winery and to enjoy the collection of sculptures carefully positioned throughout the estate.  Continue your tour by visiting the CVNE Wine Cellar for a glass of Cune Rioja Reserva.  There will be two types of visits to view the exhibition:

About CVNE

CVNE (pronounced Coo-nay) also known as Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España and Cune (also pronounced Coo-nay), was founded in 1879 by brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa in Haro, Rioja and is still family-owned and family-operated by direct descendants of the founders, Victor and Maria Urrutia.

Cune's philosophy has always been, and continues to be grounded in an ongoing quest for achieving excellence in the ageing of wine, and modernizing the processes of producing and crafting its wines.  The Cune Portfolio includes three wineries that symbolize the three essential principles that have always characterized Cune's philosophy:  the respect of heritage evident at the historic Cune Winery where the highly-acclaimed Imperial wines are produced, the embrace of new technology and innovation at the James Bond-inspired Viña Real Winery; and the expression of terroir embodied at the Contino Winery, the first singe estate winery in Rioja.
