Bodies of Suspects in Highway Murders Likely Found

Two bodies suspected of being the Canadian teenagers believed to have murdered three people along a deserted stretch of highway in Manitoba, Canada, have been discovered on a riverbank near in the vicinity of the last known sighting.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commanding Officer Jane MacLatchey noted during a press conference the bodies were discovered less than 1km from the last known sighting of Bryer Schmegelsky, 19, and Kam McLeod, 18, and less than 8km from the torched vehicle belonging to Professor Leonard Dyck, 64, Botany lecturer from the University of British Columbia said to have been the teen's third homicide victim.

The bodies found on the bank of the Nelson River were unrecognizable for positive identification on site and transported to Winnipeg for autopsies. The speculation as the terrain is harsh, challenging, and populated with wild animals is that the two were either mauled to death or mauled beyond recognition after suicide.

The two were suspected of committing three homicides including American Chynna Deese, of North Carolina, and her boyfriend Lucas Fowler from Australia, were found shot beside their broken-down van along the highway near Liard Hot Springs. Both had been shot execution style.

On July 19, 2019, four days later, Dyck, was found dead. His vehicle found not far from the scene had been torched.

RCMP stated during a press conference, "Autopsies of the two had been scheduled to determine the cause of death and to ensure definitive confirmation," Adding, "We believe they are in fact they are the individuals we suspect in the three homicide."

She also indicated the had spoken with the families of the victims and the suspects informing them of the newest details. Investigators worked tirelessly, since the discovery of the two victims alongside the highway in Manitoba.

The criminal investigation is not concluded, according to the statement, until the RCMP can ensure investigative findings are accurate and evidentiary timelines confirm theories and eliminate any other suspects.

Authorities praised the dedication of police working this exhausting manhunt in extremely remote locations, tackling harsh terrain, circumventing the dangers of wildlife, searching underwater after evidence questioned whether the two may have drowned, and continuing the challenging search, with perseverance.
