Money News: North American Markets Down; European, Asian Markets Split

The DOW Jones Industrial Average, wrestling the Bear fell for the fifth straight week, closed down with the North American Markets following with the Shanghai Composite and Germany’s DAX also closing down.

The DOW opened the trading week down, with small rolling rallies and declines until midweek when once again a Wednesday rally saw a strong serge where the DOW remained with only a mild end of week dip.  Unfortunately, the late week surge was not strong enough to carry the limping DOW toward a break even week. The DOW ended the trading week down at 18,015.95 (-99.89/-0.55%). Opening at 18,116.24, the DOW held a day range of 18,010.58-to-18,117.71.

Gainers include Hanwha Q Cells Co Ltd (+2.05/+11.75%) with a closing price of $19.49 per share, IPC Healthcare Inc (+5.49/+10.49%) with a closing price of $57.82 per share, Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc also closed up at $29.84 for a gain of (+2.53/+9.26%) and FibroGen Inc closing up at $21.72 per share for a gain of (+1.69/+8.44%)

Losers for the week include Finisar Corp closing down at $19.88 per share for a loss of (-2.27/-10.25%), Sage Therapeutics Inc closing down at $70.53 with a loss of (-6.00/-7.84%), YY Inc (-5.27/-6.76%) with a closing price of $74.07, and Etsy Inc (-1.02/-6.65%) with a closing price of $14.31.

Active for the week included Microsoft Corp in medium trading moved 63.84M shares closing down at $46.10 per share with a loss of (-1.33%), Apple Inc moved 54.72M shares in medium trading to close down at $126.60 per share for a loss of (-1.00%), Frontier Communications Corp in light trading moved 40.78M shares, closing up at $5.03 per share for a gain of (+0.60%) and Intel Corp in light trading moved 39.01M shares closing down at $32.07 per share with a loss of (-0.96%).

The NASDAQ closed down at 5,117.00 for a loss of (-15.95/-0.31%).

The S&P 500 also closed down at 2,109.99 for a loss of (-11.25/-0.53%).

World Markets 50/50 Split

The ten most watched world markets closed the trading week with a 50/50 split. The North American Markets including the DOW Jones Industrial, S&P500, NASDAQ, Canada's S&P TSX Composite, Germany's DAX and Shanghai Composite all closed down.  Central European Markets including London's FTSE 100 and CAC 40 of France as well as Asian Markets, Hong Kong Hang Seng, Japan's highly traded Nikkei 225, and SENEX of India all closed up.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, began the trading week with a slight rally followed by a sharp decline and continued this slight rally/slight decline throughout the remainder of the week. Friday a sharp rally carried the Nikkei throughout the remainder of the Friday to close the trading week up at 20,174.24 with triple digit gain of (+183.42/+0.92%). 

Gainers for the week include Furukawa Co Ltd (+16.00/+7.44%), Teijin Ltd (+29.00/+6.28%), NH Foods Ltd (+129.00/+4.84%), Nissan Chemical Industries Ltd (+102.00/+3.94%).

Losers include Tokyo Gas Co Ltd (-14.70/-2.14%), Toho Zinc Co Ltd (-7.00/-1.75%), Inpex Corp (-23.50/-1.64%) and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd (-8.00/-1.10%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in 27 straight weeks of strong trading, moving an impressive 164.97M shares to close up at ¥252.30 for a gain of (+0.16%), Tokyo Electric Power Co Inc in medium trading, moved 61.21M shares to close down at ¥671.00 for a loss of (-1.03%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc, in medium trading moved 47.91M shares to close up at ¥867.80 for a gain of (-1.56%), and Sharp Corp, also in mild trading, moved 37.17M shares to break even ¥165.00 for a gain/loss of (0.00%).

FTSE 100

London Markets opened the trading week continuing the previous week’s pattern of small gains and strong declines, with a strong rally by midweek the FTSE nearly recouped all losses. The gains were followed with an end of week rally to close the trading week up at 6,710.45 with small single digits gains of (+2.57/+0.04%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include TUI AG (+38.00/+3.38%), Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC (+53.00/+2.80%), ARM Holdings PLC (+30.00/+2.76%) and London Stock Exchange Group PLC (+56.00/+2.38%).

Losers include Fresnillo PLC (-12.50/-1.72%), Royal Mail PLC (-7.50/-1.47%), Glencore PLC (-4.05/-1.47%) and Randgold Resource Ltd (-52.00/-1.14%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 161.80M shares in strong trading, closed up at €86.70 for a gain of (+0.66%), Vodafone Group PLC in mild trading moved 44.29M shares to close up at €234.30 for a gain of (+0.51%), Barclays PLC, in mild trading moved 39.84M shares to close up at €266.37 per share for a gain of (+1.84%), and Glencore PLC, in light trading moved 28.58M shares to close down at €272.30 per share for a loss of (-1.47%),

Hang Seng Index 

The Hang Seng Index began the trading week with a cascading decline with minimal fluctuation and with an impressive Friday rally the Hang Seng manage to back close the week up with strong double digit gains.

The Hang Seng closed down at 27,280.54 with triple digit gains of (+372.69/+1.39%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include AIA Group Ltd (+1.00/+1.98), Lenovo Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.22/+1.97%), CK Hutchison Holding Ltd (Hong Kong) (+2.10/+1.84%), CLP Holdings Ltd (+1.15/+1.77%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes China Construction Bank Corp, in impressive trading moved 432.22M shares to close up at HDK$7.50 (+0.27%), Bank of China Ltd, in strong trading, moved an impressive 257.61M shares to close up at HK$5.17 (+0.19%), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd, also in strong trading, moved 220.64M shares to break even at HK$6.37 (0.00%), and PetroChina Co Ltd in medium trading moved 62.95M shares to close up HK$8.59 (+0.35%).

Losers for the week include China Resources Enterprise Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.10/-3.10), Ping An Insurance (Group) Co of China Ltd (Hong Kong) (-2.40/-2.18%), Hang Lung Properties (Hong Kong) (-0.45/-1.90%), China Resources Power Holdings Co Ltd (0.40/-1.90%).
