Money News: DOW Suffers Triple Digit Loss; London, Hong Kong Close Down; Nikkei, France, Rally

The DOW Jones Industrial Average, unable to shake the Bear possibilities, suffered massive triple digit losses pulling the NASDAQ, the S&P 500, down as the top three world market indicators took a hit marking a down turn in investment confidence.

The DOW performed steadily throughout the week but was unable to rally and posted high triple digit losses to close down at 17,856.78 (-278.94/-1.54%). Opening at 18,135.72, the DOW held a daily range of 18,825.15-to-18,135.72.

Pharmaceuticals performed well across the DOW leading the gainers for the week with technology stocks leading he losers.

Gainers include Finisar Corp (+1.90/+9.35%) with a closing price of $22.23 per share, Exact Sciences Corp (+2.07/+9.23%) with a closing price of $24.50 per share, KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals Inc (+3.13/+6.26%) with a closing price of $53.13, Zynga Inc (+0.13/+5.39%) with a closing price of $2.54.

Losers for the week include Royal Gold Inc closing down at $63.03 per share down (-6.13/-8.86%), Andersons Inc closing down at $42.11 with a loss of (-3.25/-7.16%), Homeinns Hotel Group also closed down at $25.10 for a loss of (-1.85/-6.86%) and Randgold Resources Ltd closing down at $69.25 per share for a loss of (-4.27/-5.81%)

Active for the week included Apple Inc in medium trading moved 72.84M shares, closing down at $126.60 per share for a gain of (+0.17%), MicroSoft Corp moved 36.25M shares in light trading to down at $42.36 per share with a loss (-1.74%), Intel Corp in light trading moved 32.37M shares closing down at $33.19 per share with a loss of (-1.60%) and Micron Tecnology Inc in light trading moved 28.30M shares closing down at $28.50 per share with a loss of (-2.66%).

The NASDAQ closed down at 4,927.37 with a loss of (-55.44/-1.11%).

The S&P 500 also closed down at 2,071.26 for a gain of (-29.78/-1.42%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets experienced a 60/40 split as the North American Markets, including the DOW Jones Industrial, S&P500, NASDAQ, Canada’s S&P TSX Composite, Mexico’s IPC, London’s FTSE 100, the Asian’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong Hang Seng all closed down with Germany’s DAX, Japan’s Nikkei 225, the CAC 40 of France, and SENEX of India closing up.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, stayed steady throughout the week with small gains to close the trading week up, minimally, with minor double digit gains, at 18,797.94 for a gain of (+12.15/+0.06%). 

Gainers for the week include Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co (+175.00/+12.93%), UNY Group Holdings Co Ltd (+68.00/+10.21%), Ajinomoto Co Inc  (+173.50/+7.31%), Olympus Corp (+235.00/+5.63%).

Losers include Yahoo Japan Corp (-19.00/-3.92%), Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd (-49.00/-2.51%), Tokyo Obayashi Corp (-17.00/-2.12%) and Kajima Corp (-10.00/-1.82%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in twelve straight weeks of strong trading, moved 177.81M shares, enough for a rally, and closed up at ¥220.40 for a gain of (+1.24%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc in medium trading moved 72.45M shares to close up at ¥775.90 for a gain of (+2.48%). Also active on the Nikkei 225 were Unitika Ltd, in medium trading moved 51.58M shares to close up at ¥55.00 for a gain of (+1.85%) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp also in light trading moved 32.72M shares to close up at ¥324.50 for a gain of (+1.12%).

FTSE 100

London Markets, rallied thought the week, although not enough to edge up and finished the trading week down with mid double digit losses to end the week 6911.80 with a loss of (-49.34/-0.71%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Weir Group PLC (+72.00/+4.14%), ITV PLC (+5.90/+2.45%), Sports Direct International PLC (+9.50/+1.41%), London Stock Exchange Group PLC (+31.00/+1.29%).

Losers include Fresnillo PLC (-38.55/-5.23%), Randgold Resources Ltd (-247.00/-5.11%), Intu Properties PLC (-13.90/-3.84%) and Vodafone Group PLC (-6.75/-2.98%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 126.48M shares in strong trading to close up at €81.57 for a gain of (+0.78%), Vodafone Group PLC, in light trading moved 45.47M shares to close down at €219.50 per share for a loss of (-2.98%), Glencore PLC also in light trading moved 34.66M shares to close down at €289.00 for a loss of (-0.98%) and Barclays, in light trading moved 28.12M shares to close down at €265.35 per share for loss of (-0.24%).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index, along with the Shanghai Composite, took the brunt of the Asian Market downturn, and in weak trading closed down with mid double digit losses.

The Hang Seng closed down at 24,164.00 with double digit losses of (-29.04/-0.12%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include Lenovo Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (+2.17/+0.26%), AIA Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (+0.90/+1.89%), Want Want China Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd (+0.09/+1.10%), Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.20/+1.00%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of Chin Ltd , in intense trading, 240.06M shares closed down HK$4.21 (-0.47%), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China also in intense trading moved 225.30M shares closing down at HDK$5.41 (-0.37%), and China Construction Bank Corp in active trading moved 193.88M shares to close down at HK$6.17 for a loss of (-0.32%).

Losers for the week include China Unicorm Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.38/-3.03), BOC Hong Kong Holdings Ltd (-0.45/-1.68%), Kunlun Energy Co Ltd (-0.12/-1.59%), CITIC Ltd (-0.18/-1.34%).
