Academy Award Winning Actress Olympia Dukakis Dies

Academy Award winning actress Olympia Dukakis, whose career spanned seven decades across film, television and theatre has died in her New York City home according to a statement released from her family. She was 89.

Dukakis, whose began with uncredited role in the early 1960's rose to prominence with her award winning portrayal as Rose Castorini in the 1987 feel good film Moonstruck received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe, the National Board of Review Award, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award and received a BAFTA nomination and received multiple Emmy Award nominations for her television performances.

A memorable actress, she starred in a string of films in the 1980's including the 1989 southern Dixie drama Steel Magnolias as Clariee Belcher, and as the tough, with a heart of Gold, Principal Jacob's in the 1995 film Mr. Holland's Opus.

Throughout her career she appeared in 60 films, more than 50 television series and 130 stage productions. She taught acting at New York University for more than fifteen years.

Her death was announced by her brother, Apollo Dukakis, "on Facebook, saying "My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her [husband] Louis," FoxNews.com reported.
