The “GREAT British Film Reception” Will Honor the British Nominees of the 86th Annual Academy Awards®

Los Angeles, CA – February 14, 2014 – Academy Award® nominees from the United Kingdom will be feted at the 2014 "GREAT British Film Reception" in Los Angeles.  The February 28 reception celebrates the UK's creative accomplishments in film and will be hosted by the British Consul General Chris O'Connor OBE and Academy Award® Nominee Steve McQueen CBE, in partnership with the British Film Commission and event sponsors Jaguar Land Rover and Virgin Atlantic.

The UK is represented at this year's Academy Award® with nominees in films including 12 Years a Slave, All is Lost, American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Iron Man 3, Karama Has No Walls, Mandela:  Long Walk to Freedom, Philomena, Prisoners, Room on the Broom, The Act of Killing, The Invisible Woman, The Lady in Number 6:  Music Saved My Life, and The Voorman Problem

"The UK consistently features as the country with the most nominations outside of the US, and this year is no exception, with our world-class nominees in everything from acting and directing to music, animation and visual effects," said British Consul General Chris O'Connor. "It is their skills and talents which make the UK film industry thrive and which make such an effective statement about British creative excellence.  I am delighted that Steve McQueen, who himself is nominated for directing one of the most acclaimed and important films of the year, is co-hosting this celebration with me. Steve is a brilliant filmmaker and visual artist who represents the very best of British creativity."

Launched in 2012, the GREAT campaign invites the world to take a fresh look at everything Britain has to offer that makes it a GREAT place to visit, study, invest and do business.  The campaign is built around key pillars of British excellence:  Creativity, Technology and Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Knowledge, Music, Sport, Shopping, Heritage and Countryside.

The UK is where culture meets commerce and great success stories begin.  UK creativity inspires the world, producing a stream of individuals who are hugely influential in global media, entertainment and the arts.

Film plays a major role and generated $1.4 billion of inward investment from the US into the UK in 2013. The British Government through the British Film Commission (BFC) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) works to sustain and increase these levels of investment by attracting, encouraging and supporting the production of international feature films in the UK.

The British Government is committed to supporting the UK as a centre for excellence in filmmaking.  The UK Film Tax Relief is one of the most generous, consistent and well-functioning in the industry.

As part of the event, Jaguar Land Rover will have its latest models on display including the all-new Jaguar F-TYPE convertible sports car and the 2014 Range Rover Sport, the fastest, most-agile, and responsive Land Rover ever; and using a specially designed interactive photo scene, Virgin Atlantic has recreated a replica of their Upper Class bar, in which guests can 'star' in their own movie scene.
