Ariel Vromen to Direct Sascha Penn Scripted L.A. Riots Thriller "April 29, 1992"

Director Ariel Vromen has set his next film, signing on to direct Sacha Penn's thriller April 29, 1992. Vromen is fast-tracking the project and plans to shoot in June, with an expected release set for the April 2022.

Penn wrote the original script, which takes place on the first night of the Los Angeles riots in 1992. It is the story of a custodian who brings his son to work with him and they quickly find themselves in the middle of a heist gone wrong.

The goal is for the film to be completed in time for next year's 30th anniversary of the riots that rocked Los Angeles for 6 days following the acquittal of four LAPD officers for the use of excessive force in the videotaped and widely viewed arrest and beating of Rodney King. 63 people died, more than 12,000 were arrested and the city sustained over $1 billion in property damages.

Maurice Fadida will produce alongside Vromen. Adam Kolbrenner, Penn, and Andreas Rommel will also produce. Rommel's Trident Films will finance.

Ariel Vromen stated, "I love what Sacha Penn did with this script. To make a film set during the '92 LA riots felt so real and relevant 29 years later. I'm excited to tell this original heist tale that has great suspense and action sequences and that also delivers an important social message."
