Serengeti Review – Stunning, Engaging, Four Stars

Serengeti, from the Discovery Channel, present a six-part documentary series on Africa’s majestic geographical region as seen through the eyes of the many wild animals who make their home in this grand and impressive land that time forgot.

Created by American Idol’s Simon Fuller and narrated by Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Serengeti is a magical first-person introduction through voice over story as well as stunning visuals positioned around natural habitat.


The Outpost Review - Emotional, Gripping Performances, Solid War Drama


Throughout the six episodes the audience is introduced to most of the wild animals many would expect to find in this biopic. Serengeti also adds unusual inclusions such as ostriches, wild dogs, hyenas, and wild boars.

From the beginning we are introduced to the laws of the jungle, tribes. and clans and how infractions, and threats are managed. As the lions are considered the king of the jungle, we meet a female lioness, who has had cubs with a male from outside her pride. She is forced into exile. We follow her throughout the six episodes.

Baboons are another aggressive animal when dealing with inter-clan rivalry. We become acutely aware of the qualities of a good leader and one who is only considered with his own survival. We find the Baboons feast on the delicacy of alligator eggs and figs.


Made in Italy Review – A Delightful Escape, Magnetic and Inviting


Elephants are also featured in the first six episodes, as we are introduced through voice over to a herd of elephants, who are led by the oldest matriarch. Once males reach a certain age, they are forced to leave the herd and if lucky find a new herd to join.

Shot over a year, many cameras are planted at ground level capturing the fullness of the animal as they step closer. Drone footage also captures the vastness of the Serengeti National Park, the treacherous lands, the migration patterns, the ecosystem of life.

Throughout the series we come to understand the Great Migration, and the dangers that each face as they cross the rivers on this seasonal trek to feed on the lush growth. The dangers lurk in the dead eyes of the alligator who challenge each to attempt the crossing.

Zebra’s are also featured, as a foul and her mother are forced to cross the alligator infested water and are separated by the rushing current. As each attempt to find the other, we are able to understand the difference in the sounds used. Each of the female animals emit a different sound when they call for their young. The documentary series highlights how young are trained to trip and kill on the hunt.

The black maned lions, who rule the great plains of the Serengeti and stalk their prey with the intent of killing any cub not of its tribe. with as each wait migratory patterns of each of the animals and the

Nature is also a part of the six-part series, as lighting strikes ignite a wildfire and the animals are forced to flee, families are separated, parents and children are missing. The fire is followed by a downpour which floods the lands.
