During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet cameramen filmed 3.5 million meters of front-line newsreels, which is approximately 2,100 hours. Basically, these are military actions - real or staged, front-line life, portraits of heroes - scouts, tankmen, snipers, as well as shots of destroyed cities and towns, civilians killed by the Germans.

However, the names of the authors of these frames are almost unknown to anyone, because most often they were not indicated in newsreels, but it is thanks to them that we have real evidence of the war.

"Completing this project, we decided to introduce by name those whom we showed briefly, as they say, a general list. Name the names of these real heroes, "said the creator of the project, Alexei Khanyutin.

According to some sources, there were 257 operators of the Great Patriotic War, according to others - 318. Among them was Boris Dementyev, who was lifting the blockade in Leningrad, who was the first operator to enter the destroyed Reich Chancellery in Berlin; Anatoly Krylov, who was considered the best specialist in shooting the advancing infantry, was twice wounded at the front; feature film operator Julius Kun, one of the few who managed to master front-line reporting, and also Vladimir Golovnya, who during the war years rose from a front-line operator to director of Mosfilm.

Film historian Vladimir Mikhailov, who thoroughly studied the work of front-line operators, pointed out at one time the sad statistics: "Every second is wounded, every fourth is killed. That was the price of a newsreel. "

The project "How the war was filmed" was created with the support of the Institute for Internet Development within the framework of the "Culture" national project. Its task is to return the authorship to the anonymous footage of the military chronicle, to tell about those who, at the risk of their lives, captured the most dramatic moments of the Great Patriotic War. It consists of 20 short films, 12 of which are portraits of leading front-line operators, the rest is a story about the work of newsreels during the war years.

The names of those who filmed the war: the last episode of the project about front-line operators was released.
