The Weldon Family Collection Sold by Sotheby’s

Sotheby's International Art House had a record breaking spring season that included a distinctive sale, the single owner Weldon Family, passionate collectors of Flemish Art, who amassed an incredible and significant collection of notable paintings.

Sotheby's is pleased to present a special single-owner sale in New York of the Weldon Collection. Henry and June "Jimmy" Weldon were passionate New York collectors who put together a remarkable group of paintings, centered around but not limited to Dutch and Flemish 17th century pictures.

The Weldon Collection

Sotheby's sale of The Weldon Collection, a remarkable assemblage of Dutch and Flemish paintings amassed by the late Henry and June "Jimmy" Weldon over a period of several decades, achieved the total of $22,221,750.

Sixty artists were featured in the lot. Highlights include still lifes by Adriaen Coorte, Balthasar van der Ast, Ludger Tom Ring, and Ambrosius Bosschaert, views by Hendrick Avercamp, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Post, and Aelbert Cuyp, as well as works by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and many others.

The sale was led by a very early still life by Ludger tom Ring, who was instrumental in the development of the genre as subject. Still Life With Wild Roses, Peonies And Other Flowers In A White Earthenware Vase sold for $3,130,000, more than double the high estimate (est. $800,000/1,200,000) and set a new record for the artist at auction.

Other highlights included a remarkable collaboration by two masters, Sir Paul Rubens and Jan Breughel the Younger – Landscape With Pan And Syrinx, which brought another $3,130,000, while Adriaen Coorte's Wild Strawberries On A Ledge sold for $2,050,000 and Hendrick Avercamp's a Winter Scene With A Windmill And Figures On A Frozen Riverfetched $1,810,000, both exceeding their high estimates.
